Boating  Safety

On public waters of NH, the New Hampshire Department of Safety now requires persons 16 years of age or older operating a powerboat with an engine in excess of 25 horsepower (including electric power motors) to have a valid safe boating education certificate.  Any person who holds a certificate from any state that meets or exceeds the requirements of the boating education law shall be exempt.  Proof of certification needed.

In June 2006, House Bill 1463, was passed which requires everyone after January 1, 2007 to take a proctored examination in order to receive a New Hampshire boating education certificate. It also requires everyone to get a minimum of 80 percent on the examination.  Both the online course and home study course will be available after January 1, 2007 and will allow people to study, take pre-tests and receive a course completion.  The New Hampshire Marine Patrol offers classroom courses.  Courses are listed periodically in newspapers and can be found on the following website:  http://www.nh.gov/safety/divisions/ss/boatinged/index.html ; Upon completion, call 1-888-254-2125 or 1-603-294-2645 to schedule a time for a proctored examination at any of the numerous locations.  MLA has many Boating Guide books and they are also available for printing at:
